Costs

Let’s be honest… who wouldn’t want to SCUBA dive? The only reasons that not everyone is are:

  1. Geography – it kinda needs a decent coast or lots of quarries to stop things getting repetitive. Exeter has both.
  2. Cost – people believe that it’s an exclusive sport… though it doesn’t have to be! Learning to dive with us is between 2 and 3 times as cheap as the equivalent PADI course (and you go 2 meters deeper!) and just as recognised. If you can dive already, our boat dive prices are less than 1/5 of the local charter boats.

Whether you are learning to dive or already qualified, diving at university is one the cheapest way possible…

Membership Costs:

To dive with us, all members need to be at least a member of EUSAC (for obvious reasons), BSAC (for 3rd party insurance) and the AU (for 1st party insurance) which runs up to £89.50 for the year. As lots of people are already members of BSAC we take payments separately for this. Once you’re a member of all three that allows you to borrow any of EUSAC’s kit for free on dives run by EUSAC or you organise with other EUSAC members, leaving only transport and air (and boat) pay.

Trainees of a long course (like Ocean Diver) it’s a good idea to get EUSAC’s Sports Park membership too – allowing free access to the pool Tuesday 19.00-20.30 and Thursday 20.30-22.00 when we are providing pool cover for training or fitness swimming. This is optional to all members so, if you already can dive, there’s no need to join this but pool entry is PAYG £5.00 direct to AU.

Course Costs:

All instructors are volunteers so their time is free (though we all accept alcohol if you’re feeling generous xD ) making these courses one of the cheapest ways to learn/progress your learning.

Instructors are eligible for refund to their EUSAC membership of £50 after 9 hours instructing as a thanks 🙂 .

Air Fills and Other Charges:

Air is your responsibility (unless you’re training or arranged with committee) and you’re expected cover the costs of refilling…. though it will be be full when you pick it up. If you’re returning it less than 210 bar tag it with the red labels, let the Treasurer know and pay via our Tilt at cost (£4.00).

On a dive there may be other charges like using a charter boat, diving off our RIB at (£15/day split between all the divers, so about £3 each/day), transport and entry fees etc. These are usually paid on the day, as they depend on what site is being dived. However every effort is made to give an estimate of the cost before the day.

Equipment Costs:

Although the club does own a considerable amount of equipment it is impossible for us to supply everything so there are some items which as a member you will be expected to buy for your selves. However, if the club has it you can borrow it for free all year as part of your membership fee 🙂

As a trainee you will not be expected to go out and get everything at once, and the cost of buying equipment can be spread out throughout your training. However for training in the sea you will require your own:

  • Mask and Snorkel
  • Gloves
  • Fins and wetsuit boots
