Annual Fund

Annual FundThe Annual Fund is the Exeter University’s annual appeal which seeks the philanthropic support of its alumni and friends to invest in the University and its students. This year, EUSAC is applying for funding, totalling over £2500, to help restore the boat with the aim of helping us dive more often.

Exeter University Sub Aqua Club (EUSAC) has for decades introduced students to scuba diving in a safe, social environment at a fraction of the cost charged by external dive centres. Furthermore, with the UK offering some of the best sea diving in the world, with the wrecks off the south-coast particularly famous, EUSAC has allowed qualified divers to explore British diving sites. With the vast wealth of south-coast diving in offshore locations, EUSAC has used our small boat moored in Teignmouth to affordably access these sites.

Recent unavoidable damage to the boat sustained in the tumultuous weather over recent years has resulted in the boat being unusable. Moreover with improvements over rib and small boat safety, such as hydraulic steering, a substantial one-off investment is needed to make the boat usable to future years of students. EUSAC has the technical boat expertise to implement these repairs and improvements, but the unfortunate situation where various problems have manifested simultaneously means we lack the funds to address the issue independently. Thus assistance from the Annual Fund is vital to allow future EUSAC members the chance to experience off-shore UK diving.

Access to a small boat has many advantages for EUSAC members. The opportunity to dive off-shore is a major attraction for the club, and allows us to retain members so that they progress through their various diving qualifications; this in turn allows members to train new divers and maintain the success the club has in introducing both new and experienced divers to British diving. Additionally the boat also allows students to attain qualifications in boat-handling and become competent boat and dive leaders, again an opportunity rarely afforded to UK students.
