LUBE 2012!
Team A
consisted of: Jonny Kydd,
Ross Kent and Liv Steele
Team B consisted of: Joe Holzer-Fleming,
Callum May and
Rosa Williams
The two individuals consisted of: Angus Laurenson and
Jonathan Bennett
As this was the last round of the competition, everyone made a final push to get those desired results, efforts that really paid off in the end, with some fantastic scores for the round, and overall.
Congratulations go to Liv Steele who came 4th in the round and 5th overall for the entire competition, a brilliant result to finish on for her final year at the Uni. On the opposite end of the scale, Rosa Williams performed so well for her first year of competitions, placing 9th overall out of 41 girls - we expect great things to come!! The same goes for other first years, such as Jonny Kydd, who placed 8th overall out of 104 guys who competed over the rounds! Again, very much one to watch, who I'm sure will be making the top 3 by he time he's in 3rd year!
Special mentions also go to the other Exeter competitors who made the commitment and produced some cracking final results, allowing Exeter A team to come 6th, and Exeter B team to come 12th, out of 27 teams. All the results can be accessed here, along with other competition information: http://www.kclmc.org/2012results
As LUBE comes to an end for this year we can be proud of the amazing results that we have achieved and look forward to bettering them even more next time. Roll on LUBE 2013!

Naked Calendars!
Do not miss this rare and valuable opportunity!

Happy New Year!
Well done if you were able to continue climbing over Christmas (that's more than I got to do, living in a place completely devoid of any nearby climbing centres and crags!), but not to worry if you haven't been, they'll be plenty of opportunity to do loads of climbing over the coming term. Hopefully the weather will be slightly better this term too so we'll be able to get outside on some real rock more often - trips to Dartmoor, Cheddar Gorge, Baggy Point, Portland and a few more are on the cards.
We've also got an exciting event happening at the end of this term - University of Exeter Climbing Club's first club trip to Fontainbleau in France! This is something a bunch of us do every year anyway, so we thought we'd extend it, making it into a club trip. It promises to be a pretty awesome trip as the climbing in Font is some of the best in the world, with problems to cover every level of climber from beginner to super strong! Looking forward to that!
In case you haven't yet heard, there was also an important announcement at the end of last term, and we're happy to welcome Katie Morley as our second social secretary! After a mini Christmas Dinner AGM she was voted in and we look forward to many happy socials with our new Social Duo.
A final, quick reminder as well that if you haven't yet picked up stash, contact Lucy and you'll be able to arrange something with her. There are also some Climbing Club Naked Calendars 2012 left, so email Lucy again if you want to get your hands on one of these exclusive pieces of merchandise!! They cost £7.50, and feature many of your favourite EUCC climbers with very little on... Proceeds of all sales go to Cancer Research, so it's a very good cause.
Enough for now, and am looking forward to seeing you all again soon. Good luck to those with exams and essay hand-ins. Come for a celebratory climb afterwards!

Competition at The Barn!

Peak District Trip!
Being October, it's always risky weather-wise, but luckily it pulled through for Saturday and we had a fantastic day up at Stanage plantation checking out the trad climbing, followed by some of the less rope inclined heading off for some top notch bouldering.
As the weather headed in, it was time to get back to the scout hut for showers and a few drinks, followed by some proper northern sized portions at the local pub.
Let the games commence... After food it was time to head back to the hut for the traditional climbing games, thanks to Oli for resurrecting some of the games that time forgot. Congrats to all the winners, especially (if I may say so) to myself and Ross for an epic performance in the vaguely inappropriate sling game!
Sadly, the weather didn’t hold out for us on Sunday, so we headed down into Sheffield to the Climbing Works, one of the UK’s premier bouldering walls. Here we spent the day using up what little skin we had left on some superbly set problems.
3p.m. was home time and with only a minor car park catastrophe involving a wall and the minibus, we started the journey home. I guess all that is left to say now is thanks to everyone for making it such a fantastic weekend; I look forward to a great year with you all!

Climbing Club 2011-2012
After a long, busy, and rather sweaty day at the Freshers Fair today, I am pleased to welcome a whole bunch of new (and returning) members to the Climbing Club! Looks like it's going to be a pretty exciting year with loads of people to make friends and climb with. Don't worry if you're a bit nervous about never having done any climbing before - all of us on the committee will be around to help and there are definitely people of a similar ability to yourself that you can find to learn with.
Have a look around the rest of the site to see what we get up to on a regular basis (oooer...) and please feel free to either email me or my joint captain Harry if you have any questions.
Keeping it short for today - it was really great to meet so many of you and I look forward to seeing you all again soon at some of our weekly sessions! For the time being...rock on.
3rd September 2011
Welcome!
With the beginning of the 2011-2012 Uni year fast approaching, I thought a short word of welcome to all new Climbing Club members was in order (and a welcome back to those returning for another year!).
Having spent far too much of my own precious summer holiday closeted away and earning the dolla (...) I, for one, CANNOT WAIT to get climbing again. It's set to be an exciting year too, what with our bouldering squad in full force, great opportunities for outdoor climbing (not to mention, weekend trips away!), but most importantly, the opening of the brand spanking new Quay Climbing Centre right on our doorstep, which opens up a whole new world of possibilities for training and practice!
As a club this year, we're hoping to continue growing, whilst still retaining that friendly, intimate environment where no one's scared to try something or ask for advice. We want to inspire more and more people to give climbing and go, and hopefully realise just how much fun it is, as well as being a certified sport in its own right (it's on its way to being including in the 2020 Olympics, I'll have you know! See here for details).
Anyway, that's more than enough for now! Very much looking forward to seeing a whole host of new and familiar faces when term starts, and can't bloody wait to get cracking with some climbing!!
All the best,
Liv (one of your two Captains for the year)

End of Year - Corwall Trip
We arrived at campus bright and early Friday morning to begin the journey to Pendeen. The weather didn’t look too promising and soon after we had pitched our tents the rain started to fall. However this soon passed and luckily we managed to spend the afternoon at Sennen Cove, climbing in the sun.
The weather held out, and day 2 saw us climbing at beautiful Bosigran, a fantastic place for both experienced climbers and those of us that were new to multipitch.
On day 3 the weather finally let us down and torrential rain forced us to climb inside, though what better place to climb inside than The Barn, the sponsors of the Climbing Club themselves. In the evening we celebrated the end of a great year by going for a delicious meal in a pub in St Just.
Day 4 and back to Bosigran. This time the group split and half spent the day ascending a few of Bosi’s many great climbs, while the rest took on the adventurous Commando Ridge, a multipitch climb mostly made up of traverses. Once reunited again, we headed to St. Ives for fish and chips, before returning to Exeter exhausted but extremely happy.

Bake Off!
Thank you everyone who baked and donated at our Annual Bake Off! We raised a lovely sum of £35.65 for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust.
27th March 2011
The Climbing Club enjoys a glorious day Bouldering on the lovely Dartmoor. It wouldn't have been complete without a BBQ courtesy of the club! Always check for upcoming trips on our 'What's On' page and get in contact with us if you want to come along!
19th March 2011
Despite hangovers and some questionable music choices by Harry Whitby, all went well on the journey up to Sheffield. We arrived at Wills house, an hour late, meaning that we missed putting the ducks to bed. But after some deliciously hot curry we set off again. On arrival at the Scout hut in Hathersage we settled down for the night and got some much needed rest ready for the comp the next day.
We arrived at the climbing works ready for the competition at 10 the next day and after a rapid reshuffling of teams we were ready to compete. The problems were amazing as expected and they were being sent left, right and centre. The standard of climbing was second to none, with competition between teams and individuals extremely tight.
Having put the free chalk and boulder brushes to good use at The Climbing Works we headed off to Stanage Edge to The Plantation so that we could sneak in a bit of bouldering on grit, the stickiest substance known to man!
We then returned to Hathersage, expecting to find a orienteering group sharing the hut with us. But they didn't show. Instead an evening of Poi Poi forts and apple vodka followed (for more information see the recent article "Climbing Club Builds Fort!")
After a late start the next morning we began the long journey back to exeter via the Tibbits residence.
Thanks go out to BUCS, The Climbing Works, Will's mum for cake and curry and Mike's parents for cake and hospitality. We wil be back next year to out do ourselves!

Climbing Club Builds Fort!
After a hard day competing at BUCS and boulding in the peak district, climbers unwind by stepping back a few years and construct a fort out of mattresses!
12th March 2011
Today was another of our regular weekend trips, but one of the first with good weather this year! 10 climbers came along for a day of relaxed 'trad' climbing in an epic Dartmoor environment.
There was plenty of food, a little bit of sunshine and lots of super-cool climbing. First time out for some, first time to the crag for others. Lots of enjoyable multipitch routes as well as some slightly shorter but much bolder routes too.

The final round of LUBE for this year was held at The Arch Climbing Centre in London.
Well done to Gemma Mayne, Harry Whitby, Laurent Moseley, Liv Steele, Ross Kent and Sam Wilson who took part.
There were some cracking problems to work on and the atmosphere was buzzing. It was a fun day out with some awesome climbing and a great bunch of people.
Massive congratulation to Exeter A team who came 8th out of 27 teams overall. That's a brilliant achievement for our first proper bouldering squad! Also, special mentions to Laurent who came 8th overall out of 110 males competing, and Gemma who came 13th out of the 58 females. Really great stuff guys!
A quick thank you to King's College London who organised the entire event. It was a fantastic competition and we're certainly looking forward to getting better, getting stronger and taking LUBE 2012 by storm... Get training everyone!!
Here's a
video that the organisers of LUBE have put together...
This is what the competition is all about!!

Round 3 of LUBE
Round 3 of the London Universities Bouldering Event (for more info visit our competitions page) was held on Saturday 29th January at Craggy Island's dedicated indoor bouldering centre in Sutton.
We entered two teams of three people for this round:
Team A was Liv Steele, Ross Kent and Laurent Moseley
Team B was Gemma Mayne, Charlie Birkett and Sam Wilson
Everyone gave a great performance and we produced some cracking results. Well done to all involved.
VERY much looking forward to the fourth and final round on Saturday 5th March.
Remember, the teams vary and are chosen by Mike (captain) and Ross (bouldering sec) on how well individual members are climbing at the time.
We'll be picking the team late February so there's plenty of time to train hard and please do let us know if you're interested in competing.
Here's a picture of Ross competing at LUBE. To view pictures from all three rounds visit the LUBE website.
